About Opals

Opal is a unique gemstone prized for its “play-of-colour” — the shifting flashes of rainbow colour, seen here as vivid green, that occur as light diffracts through the microscopic silica spheres within the stone. Unlike most gemstones, which are crystalline, opal is amorphous, meaning it lacks a defined crystal structure, and each stone’s pattern of colour is entirely unique, making every opal one of a kind.

Opal ranks 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it softer than many other gemstones, so while well suited to a pendant such as this one, where it is more protected from everyday knocks than a ring would be, opals benefit from being kept away from extreme temperature changes and prolonged dry conditions, which can cause the stone to crack over time. Opal is the traditional birthstone for October and has long been associated with creativity, hope and purity, with the finest examples, particularly those showing strong, vivid colour against a dark or milky body, being highly sought after by collectors.
