Art Deco Old Cut Diamond & Onyx Ring in 18ct Gold
Stunning Art Deco 18ct gold onyx and diamond ring, set with nine old cut diamonds in a marquise design, with an onyx trim.
The design is a rectangular mount in 18ct gold, with two panels of polished black onyx flanking a central marquise-shaped lozenge pavé-set with nine old cut diamonds totalling approximately 1.20 carats. The contrast is immediate and striking: the deep, matte black of the onyx against the brilliant white of the diamonds, separated by a milgrain border that adds a further layer of period detail. The marquise lozenge shape — pointed at top and bottom, widest at the centre — is a classic Art Deco device, and here it works perfectly, drawing the eye to the diamonds while the onyx panels frame and ground the whole composition.
The nine old cut diamonds are well-matched and generously sized — at 1.20 carats total across nine stones, the pavé arrangement means the lozenge is filled with continuous, closely packed brilliance rather than isolated points of light. Old cuts in this kind of setting are particularly effective: their softer, rounder sparkle suits the period setting in a way that modern brilliant cuts do not.
The shank is 18ct yellow gold, stamped 18ct, with characteristic Art Deco shouldering that tapers cleanly from the rectangular head.
