September Birthstone - Sapphire

The September birthstone is sapphire, a precious gemstone that belongs to the corundum mineral family. It is considered to be one of the most valuable gemstones in the world and has been coveted for centuries for its beauty and durability.

Sapphires have a long and rich history that dates back to ancient times. They were considered to be the gemstone of royalty and were believed to have immense power and influence over the lives of those who wore them. In ancient Greece and Rome, sapphires were used as talismans to promote wisdom, virtue, and good fortune, and were often adorned by kings, queens, and high-ranking officials.

Considered to have a variety of meanings and symbolism, with different interpretations across different cultures and time periods, sapphires are often associated with wisdom, truth, loyalty, and faithfulness, and are believed to have the power to protect against harm, negative energy, and envy. In some cultures, sapphires are also thought to promote inner peace, harmony, and spiritual enlightenment.

Corundum is one of the most durable gemstones, which means that our vintage sapphire jewellery can continue to be worn on a daily basis.

Sapphires are found in a range of colours, with blue being the most popular and well-known. Other colours include white, yellow, green, pink, orange, and purple, among others. In vintage jewellery, we often see white sapphires in the place of diamonds, which were much more expensive!

The most valuable and sought-after sapphire is the Kashmir sapphire, which is known for its intense blue colour and velvety texture. Other notable types of sapphires include the Ceylon sapphire, which is known for its brilliant, light blue colour, and the Padparadscha sapphire, which is a rare and highly prized variety with a unique pink-orange colour.
