Vintage Opal and Sapphire Three Stone Ring | 9ct Gold
Lovely unusual vintage 9ct gold opal and sapphire three stone ring, hallmarked 1976, set with a central oval cabochon opal flanked by two round blue sapphires. The opal measures as the larger centre stone at approximately 1.5ct and shows the play of colour opal is known for, with flashes of green, pink and blue across a pale body. The two blue sapphires total approximately 0.4ct, held in claw settings on a yellow gold band.
What is play of colour in an opal?
Play of colour is the term for the flashes of shifting colour seen across an opal as it moves in the light. It is caused by the way light passes through the microscopic structure of the stone, and it is the feature opals are most valued for. No two opals show exactly the same pattern, so each stone is individual.
