The finest sapphires in antique and vintage jewellery typically originate from Sri Lanka (historically Ceylon), Kashmir, and Burma. Kashmir sapphires — mined for only a brief period in the late 19th century — are among the most sought-after gemstones in the world. More recent pre-owned pieces may feature sapphires from a wider range of origins including Madagascar and Australia, which have become significant sources over the past few decades.
In most cases, yes. The feasibility depends on the design — some highly detailed or engraved shanks require more care than a plain band, but our jewellers have extensive experience working with pieces of all ages and styles. Sapphires are very durable, but the settings deserve gentle handling regardless of the ring's age. Avoid harsh chemicals — chlorine, bleach, and acetone can damage metal and loosen settings over time. Remove the ring for heavy-duty tasks, and clean with warm water, a drop of mild washing-up liquid, and a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic cleaners are best avoided unless a jeweller has checked the setting first.
