The combination of a platinum setting with a yellow gold band is a traditional setting style, chosen to maximise the diamond's brilliance against the white metal while keeping the warmth of gold throughout the rest of the ring.
Why use platinum for the setting but gold for the band?
This mixed metal approach, common in older and vintage-style rings, uses platinum claws to hold the diamond as securely and discreetly as possible, since the white metal draws less attention away from the stone than yellow gold would. The rest of the ring is made in 18ct gold, giving the durability and tone of gold while keeping the diamond set in brighter white metal.
