Vintage Emerald Engagement Rings

Our collection of vintage and pre-owned emerald rings spans Victorian times through to more recent preloved pieces, bringing together hand-selected rings from across more than a century of jewellery making. Emerald comes in a remarkable range of greens — from the pale, bright tones of lighter stones to the deep, forest greens of a fine Colombian emerald — and the older rings in our collection feature stones chosen individually for their colour and character, with a richness and saturation that makes each one entirely its own.

Every ring in our collection has been handpicked by one of our family for its quality and beauty.

Are sapphire engagement rings a good choice?

1

Sapphire is one of the hardest gemstones (rated 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond), making it extremely well-suited to everyday wear. It has been a symbol of fidelity, wisdom, and enduring love for centuries — and of course its royal associations have made it one of the most recognisable choices for an engagement ring.

Buying pre-owned or antique means getting a genuinely individual ring at better value than buying new, with a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

What colours of sapphire appear across our collection?

2

While the rich, velvety cornflower blue of a fine Ceylon sapphire is the most iconic, our collection features sapphires across a beautiful spectrum — deep royal blue, vivid bright blue, softer periwinkle tones, and occasionally teal or parti-coloured stones. You'll also find fancy sapphires in pink and yellow in some pieces. Natural colour variation is one of the things that makes sapphires so appealing, and no two stones are exactly alike.

Where do the sapphires in our rings come from?

How do I care for a sapphire ring?

The finest sapphires in antique and vintage jewellery typically originate from Sri Lanka (historically Ceylon), Kashmir, and Burma. Kashmir sapphires — mined for only a brief period in the late 19th century — are among the most sought-after gemstones in the world. More recent pre-owned pieces may feature sapphires from a wider range of origins including Madagascar and Australia, which have become significant sources over the past few decades.

In most cases, yes. The feasibility depends on the design — some highly detailed or engraved shanks require more care than a plain band, but our jewellers have extensive experience working with pieces of all ages and styles. We offer complimentary resizing on rings purchased for over £1,000, and can advise on likely costs for other pieces before you commit.

Sapphires are very durable, but the settings deserve gentle handling regardless of the ring's age. Avoid harsh chemicals — chlorine, bleach, and acetone can damage metal and loosen settings over time. Remove the ring for heavy-duty tasks, and clean with warm water, a drop of mild washing-up liquid, and a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic cleaners are best avoided unless a jeweller has checked the setting first.

Sapphire has symbolised loyalty, truth, and celestial wisdom for hundreds of years. Medieval clergy wore sapphires to represent heaven; in Renaissance Europe they were believed to protect lovers and preserve fidelity. By the Victorian era, sapphire and diamond cluster rings were among the most popular betrothal gifts. Their association with royalty — most famously Princess Diana's sapphire ring, now worn by the Princess of Wales — has kept them at the forefront of fine jewellery for generations. Choosing a sapphire engagement ring is choosing something with centuries of meaningful history behind it.
